Carbon Black ASTM Grade N660

Carbon Black ASTM Grade N660

Carbon Black ASTM Grade N660 is a general-purpose furnace (GPF) semi-reinforcing black characterized by medium-coarse particle size and moderate structure. It offers higher filler loading capacity, lower heat generation, superior resilience, and excellent flex-fatigue resistance compared to finer grades. N660 is widely used in tire inner liners, carcass plies, sidewalls, extruded weatherstripping, cable jacketing, and general molded rubber products.

Overview & Classification

Carbon Black ASTM Grade N660 belongs to the N600 series of furnace blacks characterized by coarse primary particle size (~49–60 nm) paired with a moderate structure. Under ASTM D1765 classification:

  • N indicates a normal curing rate.

  • 6 designates the coarse particle size group.

  • 60 denotes its standard general-purpose furnace character.

Because of its balance of low heat buildup and high loading performance, N660 is one of the most widely used semi-reinforcing furnace blacks in the rubber industry.

Performance Characteristics

  • High Filler Loading Capacity: Allows high oil and carbon black loadings in rubber formulations without excessively increasing viscosity, lowering total compound costs.

  • Low Heat Generation (Hysteresis): Delivers excellent dynamic resilience and low internal heat buildup under continuous cyclic stress.

  • Superior Flex Fatigue Resistance: Imparts long service life to rubber parts subjected to continuous flexing and bending.

  • Impermeability: Provides strong barrier properties, making it optimal for inner liners and tubes where air/gas retention is critical.
