Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (HEC) is a non-ionic water-soluble polymer derived from natural wood pulp or cotton linters through chemical ethoxylation. Because it carries no ionic charge, HEC remains completely stable across a broad pH range and demonstrates exceptional compatibility with dissolved salts, surfactant packages, and complex emulsion binders. In water-borne liquid systems, it functions as a premium thickener that imparts a highly pseudoplastic (shear-thinning) rheological profile, ensuring high viscosity inside the container to prevent pigment settling, alongside smooth application flow under high-shear environments.

Performance Advantages

  • Excellent Shearing Behavior (Pseudoplasticity): Delivers high structural thickness at rest to eliminate pigment sedimentation, while thinning out easily under roller or brush pressure to ensure effortless application and uniform leveling.

  • Superior Color Acceptance: Minimizes color flooding, floating, or separation during tinting, making it the ideal stabilizing colloid for automated point-of-sale tinting machines and universal colorants.

  • Robust Bio- & Enzyme Resistance: Select treated grades offer enhanced resistance to enzymatic degradation caused by bacterial presence, ensuring prolonged viscosity and shelf-life stability in water-based paints.

  • High Hydration Control: Engineered with surface-treated delayed hydration kinetics, allowing the powder to disperse completely in water without forming lumps or agglomerates before dissolving.

Primary Industrial Applications

  • Waterbase Emulsion Paints: The primary rheology modifier for high-quality interior and exterior latex paints, controlling open-time, brush drag, film thickness, and splash resistance.

  • Oil & Gas Well Drilling: Utilized as a clean, low-residue fluid-loss additive and thickener in drilling muds, completion fluids, fracturing systems, and cementing mortars.

  • Personal Care & Cosmetics: Acts as a stabilizing thickener, binder, and film-former in liquid soaps, shampoos, hair gels, lotions, and toothpastes due to its gentle cosmetic profile.

  • Household Detergents & Cleaners: Used to modify the flow dynamics of liquid detergents, surface cleaners, and fabric softeners, preserving clear phase homogeneity.

Storage & Handling

Store in a cool, dry, and clean warehouse environment away from direct ambient moisture or high thermal cycles. HEC is highly hygroscopic; bags should remain tightly sealed and upright to avoid moisture uptake, compaction, or hard lump formation. Once opened, seal the protective inner liner immediately. Under proper dry storage environments, the shelf life is up to 12 months. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and batch-specific Certificates of Analysis (COA) are provided with every industrial delivery.
