Carbon Black ASTM Grade N220

Carbon Black ASTM Grade N220

Carbon Black ASTM Grade N220 is an intermediate super abrasion furnace (ISAF) black that offers high tensile strength, superior tear resistance, and excellent wear resistance in rubber compounds. Featuring a fine particle size and high surface area, it provides about 10% to 20% higher abrasion resistance compared to standard N330 grade carbon black. It is primarily utilized in passenger and commercial vehicle tire treads, heavy-duty conveyor belts, and high-strength industrial rubber goods.

Overview & Classification

Carbon Black ASTM Grade N220 belongs to the N200 series of furnace blacks characterized by fine particle diameter (~20–25 nm) and high specific surface area. Under ASTM D1765 classification, the "N" indicates a normal curing rate, while the "2" signifies its particle size group.

Because of its high reinforcement capability, N220 significantly enhances the mechanical durability, hardness, and road-traction behavior of vulcanized rubber compounds.

Performance Characteristics

  • High Reinforcement & Tensile Strength: Delivers exceptional mechanical strength and chip-and-cut resistance to rubber matrices.

  • Superior Abrasion Resistance: Outperforms general-purpose furnace grades like N330 and N550 in wear resistance under heavy friction.

  • Electrical Conductivity: Possesses moderate electrical conductivity, aiding electrostatic dissipation in rubber products.

  • Processing Behavior: Generates higher heat during dynamic stress and increases compound viscosity/hardness compared to coarser grades.
