Methyl Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (MHEC) is a high-purity, non-ionic cellulose ether derived from natural plant cellulose through a sequence of chemical etherification processes. Specially optimized for the construction and building materials industry, MHEC serves as an indispensable additive in dry-mix mortar formulations. By forming a structured water-retaining polymer matrix, it prevents the rapid loss of water into porous substrates, ensuring complete cement hydration while drastically improving the rheology, thixotropy, and mechanical handling properties of fresh wet mortars.

Performance Advantages

  • Exceptional Water Retention: Minimizes water evaporation and premature dry-out, ensuring sufficient moisture remains within the cement or gypsum paste to complete the curing process and maximize final structural strength.

  • High Thermal Gelation Stability: Features a high gelation temperature compared to standard HPMC grades, meaning it maintains its structural thickening and water-retaining performance even in high ambient summer temperatures and hot weather application zones.

  • Extended Open Time & Anti-Slip: Provides prolonged adjustable windows (open time) for installers adjusting tiles or panels, while maintaining excellent sag and slip resistance under heavy loads.

  • Effortless Workability: Imparts a highly lubricating, creamy consistency to wet mortars, allowing fast application with low blade resistance, which increases trowel efficiency and reduces job-site fatigue.

Primary Industrial Applications

  • Tile Adhesives & Grouts: The core additive used to achieve high slip resistance (T-class) and extended open time (E-class) for large-format ceramic, vitrified, and natural stone tile installations.

  • Wall Putty, Skim Coats & Renders: Formulated into internal and external wall cement putties to maximize crack resistance, smooth application layering, and excellent sanding performance.

  • Gypsum Plasters & Joint Compounds: Applied in machine-applied or manual gypsum plasters to control setting times, minimize shrinkage cracks, and secure uniform water management.

  • Self-Leveling Compounds: Used in low concentrations to control water segregation, bleeding, and surface sedimentation while preserving high fluid self-leveling dynamics.

  • Waterbase Paints & Coatings: Acts as a stabilizing thickener and protective colloid to prevent pigment settling and optimize roller leveling.

Storage & Handling

Store in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated warehouse environment. MHEC is highly hydroscopic and must be kept strictly protected from rain, atmospheric moisture, and direct exposure to compression or high stacking loads to prevent caking. Keep bags securely tied and sealed after opening. When stored properly under standard dry conditions, the shelf life is up to 12 months. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and batch-specific Certificates of Analysis (COA) are provided with every delivery.
